Tsavo West

Tsavo West National Park covers approximately 7,065 square kilometres and is one of Kenya’s most scenic and diverse wilderness areas. Located about 240 km from Nairobi and 250 km from Mombasa, the park is easily accessible by both road and air. Visitors travelling from Nairobi commonly enter through Mtito Andei Gate, while those from the coast use Tsavo Gate near Manyani. Other access points include Maktau, Ziwani, and Jipe Gates along the Taveta–Voi route. Several airstrips such as Kilaguni, Finch Hattons, Kamboyo, Jipe, Kasigau, and Ziwani make the park convenient for fly-in safaris.

Tsavo West is famous for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, rolling savannah, natural springs, and rich wildlife population, offering a classic yet less crowded safari experience.

Key Attractions in Tsavo West

Mzima Springs – crystal-clear freshwater pools flowing from underground lava rock, home to hippos and crocodiles
Lake Jipe – a scenic lake on the Kenya–Tanzania border, ideal for birdwatching
Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary – a protected habitat for the endangered black rhino

Tsavo West is also historically famous for the legendary “Man-Eaters of Tsavo”, the lions that attacked railway workers during the construction of the Kenya–Uganda railway in 1898.
